The latest article, in which I express the limitless love for my wheelchair has been well-received. In it, I mention how my perspective has changed and how some people talk/behave differently towards me. This has brought a lot of strange/upsetting/funny situations and taught me other valuable lessons about humanity.
Today, I thought why not share the best ones (so far) with you?!? Here we go then…
- “Lifts are for everyone.” – so are wheelchairs or crutches, some just don’t need them (luckily).
- “We do have a stair at the entrance, but could bring anything to you while you wait outside by the door.” – Told by a PHARMACY worker after enquiring how someone like myself gets to the shop. I’d prefer some independence and unnecessary fuss while browsing in shop selling medicine.
- “Some things just won’t change.” Hold my beer.
- “Cemeteries are full of so-called heroes.” Thank you for calling me a ‘so-called hero’. I’m truly honoured.
- “Is this a B&B for disabled people?” Comment about a fancy, wheelchair-friendly hotel.
- Woman/man approaches me from behind, without uttering a word, starts pushing my wheelchair. Dude, I appreciate you want to help but there are ways to do it. Many miscommunications/conflicts arise from good intentions.
These are just a few that stand out. But the list keeps expanding. Writing this piece, I do realise there is also plenty of positivity, understanding and kindness. About that, maybe, next time.
We are from heat
The electric one
Does it shock you to see
He left us the sun?
Atoms in the air
Organisms in the sea
The son and, yes, man
Are made of the same things
