Optune, zařízení na léčbu agresivního nádoru mozku (glioblastomu), je nyní hrazeno pojišťovnami, ale pouze některým pacientům.

Účastnila jsem se konference EANO, která se právě konala zde v Praze.

Reportáž z celé konference brzy zveřejním. Nejprve bych ale ráda stručně zmínila zařízení Optune, které je od začátku října 2025 nabízeno některým pacientům s glioblastomem a hrazeno pojišťovnami (zejména VZP).

Toto rozhodnutí bylo učiněno po řadě soudních sporů pacientů s pojišťovnami, kterým byla léčba zamítnuta.

Jak mi vysvětlil zástupce společnosti Novocure, která zařízení Optune poskytuje, léčba tímto zařízením bude nyní nabízena a hrazena pojišťovnou některým nově diagnostikovaným pacientům s glioblastomem, kteří splní konkrétní kritéria, aby byla léčba účinná.

I když tato zpráva vzbudila nadšení mezi lékařskou komunitou i pacienty, je důležité k tomuto vývoji přistupovat s realistickými očekáváními. Tato léčba není vhodná pro každého a zásadně neléčí nemoc. Místo toho má za cíl zpomalit postup onemocnění a doplňuje standardní léčbu (radioterapii a chemoterapii).

Diagnóza nádoru mozku je velmi obtížná situace a často pacienti i jejich blízcí zoufale hledají jakékoli možnosti léčby. Chápu, jak beznadějně situace může působit a potřebu hledat cokoliv, co by mohlo pomoci.

Přesto bych také doporučila rozumný přístup a uvědomění si skutečností. Bez negativity – toto zařízení nádory mozku neléčí, pouze zpomaluje jejich postup, proto rozhodně není zázračným řešením.

To, že je nyní hrazeno pojišťovnami v České republice, je sice skvělá zpráva, ale neřeší celkový problém a nádory mozku zůstávají obtížně léčitelné onemocnění.

Optune and Glioblastoma: Understanding the Promise and the Limits

Optune, the device to help treat aggressive brain tumour (glioblastoma) is now being subsidised by the insurance companies, but only to some patients.

I have been attending the EANO conference that has just been taking place here in Prague.

Report on the whole conference will follow soon. But I just like to briefly talk about the Optune device that is now since the beginning of October 2025 being offered to some glioblastoma patients and covered by the insurance companies (namely the VZP).

This decision was made after a number of lawsuits by patients against the insurance companies after being denied the treatment.

As I spoke to a representative from Novocure, company that provides the Optune treatment, it was explained to me that the treatment with the device will now be offered and covered by insurance to some newly diagnosed glioblastoma patients who will fulfil specific criteria in order to have an effective treatment.

While the news has sparked excitement among the medical community and patients alike, it’s important to approach this development with realistic expectations. This treatment is not suitable for everyone, and crucially, it does not cure the disease. Instead, it is meant to slow down the disease progression and is accompanied by the standard treatment (radiotherapy and chemotherapy).

Being diagnosed with a brain tumour is a very difficult situation and often the patients and their loved ones are desperately searching for treatments. I understand how hopeless the situation might feel and the need to look for anything that might help.

However I would also encourage a reasonable approach and consciousness. Without being negative, this device doesn’t cure brain tumours and only slows down any progression hence it’s definitely not a miracle tool. 

The fact that it’s being covered by insurance now in the Czech Republic is a great news however it doesn’t solve the issue and brain tumours remain a difficult to treat disease.
